ISO/IEC 19770-3 Software Entitlement Tag Standard
An Introduction to the Standard
The ISO/IEC 19770-3 standard for software entitlement tags is designed to integrate with ISO/IEC 19770-2, the standard for software identification tags.
The expectation is that software entitlement tags will not provide an interpretation of a software entitlement contract, but rather will specify how license consumption can be measured using automated means. This will be accomplished by providing:
- The metrics that must be collected from computing devices
- What the metrics should be compared against
- Where the measurement should be performed (on a client system, or on a server system)
By providing specific details about what must be tracked in order to reconcile software entitlements, the expectation is that the software asset management (SAM) process can be automated and become much more accurate and useful to organizations, with a much lower administrative overhead.
The Standard's Development Team
The standard defining software entitlement tags is currently under development. John Tomeny from Sasafrass Software is the convener of the ISO Other Working Group (OWG) defining this standard.
