ISO/IEC WG21 Resolution - Recognizing 19770-2 OWG Efforts

During the WG21 Interim meeting in Reading, England, the week of Oct 26, 2009, a resolution was passed recognizing the effort of the 19770-2 other working group (OWG) that developed the standard.  The following is the resolution as passed.

WG21 thanks the convener, committee chairs and volunteers involved in the other working group (OWG) responsible for the development of the ISO/IEC 19770-2 standard that specifies software identification tags. The Final Draft of this International Standard was approved for publication by ISO in October 2009. This standard provides a highly structured, cross-platform, cross-vendor definition for software identification details and removes many of the complexities involved in software discovery/inventory procedures the SAM ecosystem must deal with today.

The following individuals volunteered their time to develop material and to manage the various committees responsible for the development of the 19770-2 software identification tag standard:

The work done by this OWG and the resulting standard provide many positive benefits for the Software Asset Management (SAM) market such as reduced costs and increased software identification accuracy. The benefactors include software publishers, tool and service providers and software purchasing organizations.
Adobe Systems Inc. has already seen the value in the software identification tags and the company distributes and installs software tags for all products included in the CS4 product line. These tags allow Adobe, as well as tool and service providers and software purchasing organizations, to accurately identify products installed on a computing device as a either a stand-alone application, or as part of a suite (among other details). As more software publishers utilize software identification tags as Adobe has, the value of these tags will increase exponentially.
WG21 is also very pleased to see organizations such as Symantec, CA and ModusLink OCS creating a non-profit organization through IEEE-ISTO named TagVault.org. TagVault.org will speed the market uptake of software identification tags by providing tools, services, documentation, and normalization requirements. TagVault.org is expected to keep implementation costs lower for all SAM ecosystem members while ensuring consistency and authenticity of the data values included in the tags.
